The week’s best new releases: Little Mix, Betty Who, Sleigh Bells (!), Nathan Sykes and more

In this week’s new releases, or at least the ones that have popped up on Spotify:

  • Little Mix‘s ‘Nothing Else Matters’ sounds like a cross between ABBA and Carly Rae Jepsen. The verses seem like they’re half-finished but bloody hell, the chorus is just what 2016 needed.
  • Betty Who‘s flung herself headfirst into the omnipresent, post-Major Laser Spotpop sound with ‘Human Touch’. We were disappointed on first listen. Next thing we knew,  it had been on repeat for half an hour. The single might lack the unselfconscious sound of Betty’s previous stuff, but a) nobody in the real world was interested in that and you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do, b) the song itself is very good.
  • Sleigh Bells have made this week’s third best pop song.
  • Obviously the best song on the Nathan Sykes album isn’t on the standard edition.
  • Hey guys you’re not going to believe this, there are various pretty good, downtempo songs from solo female artists you’ve never heard of!
  • Please be aware that Zara Larsson‘s new song is not a single and is merely intended as “a little treat for Zara’s fans”. It’d seem like a complete momentum killer if we hadn’t heard some of the corkers due to appear on the album. We’re sure it’ll get ‘good numbers’ etc etc etc.
  • Someone decided it would be a good idea to cover ‘Californication’, a song by Red Hot Chili Peppers. In case you are not aware of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ work, they are the worst band in the world.

We didn’t include ‘Milky Chance’, apols.
