While the SZA has built a cult like following for her distinct approach to R&B, not everyone was an early believer. Apparently, that included Jay Z, and the Rap legend told her so personally.
In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, the Top Dawg Records singer detailed one of her first meetings with Hov where he admitted he wasn’t convinced. “Jay Z was the first person to tell me that he thought I was a fluke to my face,” she confessed. “I laughed and I said, ‘so do I.’”
The quick interaction eventually ended on a positive note with Jigga expressing his admiration for her artistry. “He was just like, ‘You’re really good, you’re pretty good,’ and I was like ‘Thanks,’” she elaborates. ‘He said, ‘I thought you were a fluke’ and I was like, ‘me too!’”
Ironically the “Drew Barrymore” singer had doubts herself. In late 2016 she hit a rough patch when she contemplated quitting music all together via Twitter. “I actually quit . @iamstillpunch can release my album if he ever feels like it . Y’all be blessed .”
Thankfully SZA stuck to her guns and kept at it. Her debut album CTRL is critically acclaimed—and eventually landed her a 2017 MTV Video Award nomination for “Best New Artist.” Let’s hope the rumors are true about her chances of landing a Grammy Award nod for 2018.
