With everything that’s been going on recently, the thought of venturing and setting up shop somewhere far out in the vast openness of the cosmos can seem appealing. While accessible interplanetary travel isn’t part of the human experience quite yet, Ben Baker Billington’s compositions as Quicksails can, temporarily, offer us refuge in an otherworldly realm. Billington, who also counts himself a member of or contributor to seminal Chicago avant-garde outfits such as Tiger Hatchery, ONO, and ADT, uses this solo project as an exploration in deftly assembling complex textures and rhythms. “Faith Feel”, off the upcoming LP Mortal, cohesively gathers influences from free jazz and experimental electronics into a whirling mosaic. Creating an expansive environment through inventive use of enveloping synthetic and percussive elements, the track transports the listener outside of their earthly confines and provides a glimpse into a seemingly alien world.
Mortal is getting a proper physical release from Hausu Mountain on January 13, but will be out for digital consumption on December 9.
